A unique gastronomic heritage

The rural way of life has stayed much the same for centuries and the traditional production of delicious crusty bread, wine, honey, sausages, and goat and sheep cheeses remain an essential part of everyday life.

This produce will be found in every restaurant, market and corner shop and is the basis for the simple but delicious food for which the Alentejo is renowned.

visit and drink

Almost every village has at least one tasca, a local restaurant usually serving large portions of traditional food at a very reasonable price - there are two such places in our local village of Caia. Expect to find porco preto (black pig, or pork fed on acorns and grain) on the menu.

In addition there is an increasing number of more sophisticated eateries opening in the larger towns.

Tapada do Falcão lies in the Portalegre DOC wine region on the Rota dos Vinhos (wine route), and is the perfect base from which to visit the many excellent wine producers in the area.

For the past few years the Tapada do Falcão vineyard has been managed by Howard’s Folly, a recently converted state-of-the art winery based in Estremoz.  Our vineyard is the main supplier of grapes for the Howard’s Folly red wine brands. Winery tours and tastings can be arranged and may be linked to a lunch in the delicious restaurant.

We can put you in touch with various other wineries if you are interested in visiting.
